Many of us were brought up believing that the Royalists (Cavaliers) in the English Civil War all wore wide-brimmed hats with plumes in them, whereas the Parliamentarians (Roundheads) all wore lobsterpot helmets. However, those who know about these things say that there was nothing in the style of clothing to distinguish one side from the other.
