At the Battle of Lewes, de Clare was Simon de Montfort’s right hand man, and played a vital part in Simon’s victory over the royal army. However, the following year, when Simon again faced the royal army, this time at Evesham, de Clare fought with the king, and helped to bring about Simon’s defeat and death.
