Charles I was executed on January 30th, 1649, after being found guilty of tyranny. The execution failed to bring the English Civil War to an end. The Royalists fought on, with Charles’ son, a fugitive disguised in peasant’s clothing, seeking to rule as Charles II. On one occasion he was obliged to hide in an oak tree while Parliamentarian troops searched below.
